One of the most difficult challenges facing the City of Cape Town’s environment is that many residents feel free to litter and dump in our communities. Often these residents feel that it is the City’s responsibility to pick up after them, or that continued littering will eventually create more jobs in their area. 

‘The City is continually exploring ways in which we can make legal and responsible disposal of waste even more convenient for residents, but there is no reason that current systems cannot work effectively if residents make the effort to use them. For instance, residents of informal and formal areas often neglect to put their refuse out for collection at scheduled times and instead dump it in informal dump sites in the area. Other times those who take on backyard tenants do not apply for extra bins to cater to the increase in waste at the property. Getting these small things right can make a big difference to the state of our communities. 

‘So, as per this campaign messaging, don’t let illegal dumping turn our City into a dump. Give us your waste, and we will take it to the right place. Let’s Act,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
